History of Shangpa Lineage
After Khyungpo Naljor established the Shangpa Lineage in the Shang Valley of Tibet in 1035 AD. These Precious Meditations and Oral Teachings were preserved in an unbroken transmission through Initiation and Sacred Commitments fully preserving its richness and vitality. Throughout its early history, the Shangpa lineage remained a lineage of practice, never concerned with power or wealth. Most of its holders were great Yogis living as hermits and householders, all of whom attained full Enlightenment. The Shangpa Tradition has very few monasteries, was without hierarchy, and long remained a “secret” lineage transmitted from one master to one disciple and on. Because it retained a relatively intimate, if not “secret” status, the Shangpa lineage has been able to preserve all of its purity, power and spiritual influence.
The previous Dorje Chang Kalu Rinpoche (1905 –1989) world renown Meditation Master and Teacher to all Schools of Tibetan Buddhism first made the Shangpa Teachings public from 1971 as he began his travels into Western countries. This responability is now held by his successor, the 2ed Kalu Rinpoche the official Head of the Shangpa Lineage for the preservation, growth and well being of the world- wide Shangpa Lineage Dharma Centers. We are grateful for the Blessings of a Living Lineage and our Kind Friend Kalu Rinpoche, a real person, just like you and me. Rinpoche understands with great compassion that everyone has Buddha Nature and seeks to transmit the Buddha Wisdoms to benefit and enrich our shared experience as Sentient Beings of this World.
